Increased Ad Revenues by $6,500/mo Over the Weekend

This is a real wakeup call for myself and hopefully other site owners out there.  If you tested something in the past (like a particular ad network) and wrote it off as a failure, go back and test it again.   About a year ago I tested YPN head to head with Adsense and decided that it was crap.   On Friday, I was forced to test YPN again because I wasn’t able to use Adsense on a particular page.  Adsense had been earning about $30/day on that page, and YPN in the same placement is now earning over $250/day.  With the success of that test, I’ve now branched out and am testing YPN in many different locations.

I can’t say that I particularly like YPN’s targeting.  I think Adsense does a better job at relevancy.  That said, you can take advantage of YPN’s “Ad Targeting” feature to give a hint about your site’s content.  The ads do seem to be relevant to the site’s audience, though not always particularly relevant to the content on any given page.  Don’t try to game the system by choosing a category that doesn’t fit your site, though, or you’ll end up with a low CTR and may get kicked from YPN altogether.

Thanks for posting the details… I have often re-visited something that didn’t work out before and when circumstances change, sometimes a little time make it worth while. Thanks, Scott

It’s getting a lower CTR but a significantly higher CPC than Adsense. It’s working better than shopping ads would, in this particular case.

Thanks for the heads up. Im all over like white on rice.

Do other networks kick you out also for having low CTR? I haven’t experienced this before.

@ commenter above - I think Scott means that YPN kicks people who game the system by choosing a category which doesn’t fit your site.

Upon further testing, it’s apparent that you really have to test YPN vs. Adsense in each and every application. YPN sucks compared to Adsense in several ad placements on some sites that I’ve tested and YPN rocks on others.
