Post Before Register = Double User Contributions

Posted by Scott on 4th February, 2008 |    13 comments

There are thousands of successful forums (and other sites that accept user reviews and other contributions) out there, and every one of them requires you to register before you can post. How annoying is it when you run across a thread on a forum where you aren’t a member, and you want to add a post, but registration is required. Sure, it’s only a few steps, but it can easily take 3-5 minutes to complete when you include the fact that nearly all forums send out an email verification (containing a link that you have to click on) before you can post.

When new users come to your site, you should throw out a red carpet, not throw up a blockade. Registration before posting turns countless users away; these are users that would contribute at least one post or thread and possibly become a long-time user of your site.

There are a couple solutions to this problem:

1) Let users begin to write their new thread or new post without registering, then after they submit it, ask them to create a username/password and enter an email address. They will already have invested time and energy into writing their post, and will be more likely to take the extra minute or two to register. Top sites like TripAdvisor are already doing this.

2) Don’t require email verification. Most forums offer captcha verification (to block spammers), which is enough anti-abuse protection for most sites, especially those sites with active moderators. Email verification just further reduces the odds that your users will complete registration and begin contributing to your site.

Testing the Theory

To test the theory that implementing #1 and #2 above will increase new post and new thread activity, I put both into place in our TechIMO.com tech support community site with 550,000 monthly unique users. After putting both changes into place, new daily thread submissions have increased 78%, and posts have increased 72%.

Putting it Into Action

Implementing #2, disabling email verification, is easy, and most forums support this as an option (where you can enable captcha verification in place of email verification). Implementing this step alone will have a positive impact on your site.

But implementing #1, allowing posts before registering, is tricky because no forum software offers this option. For TechIMO.com, we wrote our own vBulletin modification to make it work. If you are a developer or have access to one, it’s not difficult to do. If we receive enough interest, we might release the changes (for vBulletin forums), as a mod.

2ch (www.2ch.net) is a Japanese-based board that’s the largest forum in the world - and it requires no registration (In fact, they don’t even allow it). They have millions of posts each day and the model seems to work pretty well over there.

Registration is nothing but a roadblock and I’m sure if more webmasters follow suit and disable it, they’ll see significant gains in forum activity and, therefore, traffic.

Since you are trying to avoid spam and negative comments you should be good with captcha. The other option is for comments to have to be approved if the user is not registered (not ideal, but if it is active enough and there are enough mods, it is possible). Then you can base approval on ip (or ranges once a computer or ip is approved for the first time).

Good topic though and I agree that this sucks. I have had a few sites end up taking a few days to approve me and by then I have lost total interest in the topic.

That is an awesome forum you have there. Some big numbers and with the measures you talk about above it can only get bigger and better. Seem so obvious I don’t know why more don’t do the same.

How many moderators do you need for that size forum?

Not counting administrative staff, TechIMO currently has seven forum moderators and two community leaders. It is a surprisingly small moderation staff given the large number of moderators often deployed at other similar size operations.

We have managed to assemble an excellent moderation team with like-minded goals and expectations for the community, which goes a long way towards streamlining the moderating process. In addition to any great moderation staff, a core component of forum moderation is cultivating a core dedicated audience with a strong sense of community respect, which is an aspect TechIMO has enjoyed for a great number of years.

Ok, although I’m leery, I’m going to try it. I run an “Iron Man” forum, based on the comic book character which I anticipate will be getting a lot more visitors as the opening of the movie approaches.

I’ll keep a close eye on spam and inappropriate posts, but I’ll give it a shot and track my stats.

Thanks,

Vic

Thanks, this was a good advice! I have several newsletters and all of them require confirmation. An example is here: http://homeboyski.com/giveaways
Some people never confirm, even though they clearly use their own real email address (not for spamming). I think I will get rid off the confirmation procedure.

Well I opened things up as recommended and here are some results:

- First day a couple of spam posts. I disabled the ability to include links in guest posts and that pretty much stopped that.

- An increase in spam registrations, some days up to 20 at a time, so I had to re-enable email verification. If it costs new members, so be it.

- I’m not sure if there has been an increase due to allowing guest posting. While the overall posts are up a little, it could just be members because I don’t see posts that show that they’ve been created by guests.
